Why it’s a win: Regular life comes to a halt when it’s time for Carnival in Martinique. Jobs are forgotten in favor of fun, and the partying is nonstop until the effigy known as Vaval, or King Carnival, is buried and locals plead “Vaval, pas quitte nous” (Carnival, don’t leave us).
Pro tip: Lent doesn’t mark the end of this festival. Martinicans can’t go without Carnival for that long. Three weeks later, it’s time for mid-Lent (Mi-Carême) and more drunken revelry.
