San Francisco bars have a certain rep to uphold.
Edgy. Envelope-pushing. Highest concentration of mustache-and-vest combos per capita.
The ability to mix a decent cocktail is nice, too.
Of course, only one bar can reign supreme. So raise a glass to the 6th annual Fernet-Branca Barback Games, your official measuring stick of cocktailing greatness, taking over the Regency Center this Sunday.
We know what you’re thinking. Sure, you could judge the greatest bar on a sliding scale of cougar population, happy hour specials, and bathroom lines. But why do that when you can watch each of the city’s best watering holes pit their champion barbacks in keg changing and ice bucket relay races, obstacle courses, and other totally mixology-related events?
The competitors (one per bar) will be judged by a panel of heavy hitters from the Bay Area booze business — folks behind places including Hobson’s Choice, Dr. Teeth, and Albany’s Hotsy Totsy Club. The night will be rounded out by live sets from the Motown on Mondays DJs, Vau da Vire Society, and Goldenchyld (of Jabbawockeez fame).
Plus, the whole thing’s sponsored by Fernet Branca, the unofficial secret handshake of SF’s hospitality industry.
Shoot it at your own risk.
