Cinco de Derby

Spring's best excuse to go daydrinking

For the second glorious year in a row, the Kentucky Derby conincides with Cinco de Mayo to create spring's most epic party weekend.

Here are four events that make the hangover worth it.

Derby Saturday, Cinco Sunday at Elixir
You may not be into horse racing. But you will be into Elixir's special mint julep menu. Fuse holidays with the Añejo Julep (made with 4 Copas Organic Anejo Tequila) or come back Sunday for the Cinco party. Elixir will be celebrating their new Rare Tequilas Collection with $6 luge shots of El Jimador Blanco and $8 Herradura margaritas.
Sat 1-6p & Sun, 12-6p. 3200 16th St., The Mission (415-552-1633)

Cinco de Mayo Weekend Festival at Rosa Mexicano
Start the party early with live mariachi bands and an expanded patio area featuring taco stands, sombreros, and tons of cerveza. And by early, we mean very early. Mexican brunch specials (think bloody Marias, fried eggs and carnitas hash) will be served every day until 4p.
Fri-Sun, Noon-11p. 30 Mission St., SoMa (415-874-4300)

Run for The Roses at Fort Mason
Don your finest derby attire and enjoy a top shelf hosted bar at The General's Residence at Fort Mason. Stick around for live music from Pop Rocks after the fastest two minutes in sports. After all those mint juleps, no one will remember that you did the robot.
Sat 1-6p, 1 Fort Mason, The Marina. $130 here.

Shot And Chaser Specials at Blackbird
Every year you tell yourself, "I'll just drink margaritas. No shots." And yet — every year —  you end up doing them anyway. Which is why Blackbird's $7 shot-and-chaser combos are so awesome. Siete dollares buys you a shot of Lunazul Silver, plus either a sangrita or, for a buck extra, a Tecate . Andale!
Daily, 2124 Market St., Duboce Triangle (415-503-0630)
