The craft beer craze is reaching a crescendo. Hop on the PCH for an epic tour of California's coastal microbreweries.
Got a designated driver? Great. If not, hire one. Craigslist one. Just get it done, as you've got a five-stop road trip to embark on.
Day 1: Pre-Game at Half Moon Bay Brewing Co.
*Cough, cough.* Oh no, looks like you have to leave work early! Depart by 3p to make it to Half Moon Bay in time for happy hour on the deck overlooking the harbor. Let the foam slosh over the sides of your pint of Maverick Bootlegger's Brown Ale as you make a sunset toast to the trip ahead. Sure, make that two toasts.
390 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay (650-728-2739)
Day 2: Lunchtime in Paso Robles at Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
Hit the road by 8a the next morning to get to Paso Robles in time for an early lunch. After splitting a BBQ chicken pizza at the taproom, cross the street to the brewery to sample fourteen rotating taps (Wookey Jack, Velvet Merkin) of housemade beers. Our favorite part: the price. At $2-3 a pour, it's easy to sample all the suds on your list.
1400 Ramada Dr., Paso Robles (805-225-5911)
Day 2: Sampling Santa Barbara's Finest at Telegraph Brewing Co.
Make the two-hour drive to Santa Barbara and park for the evening. You'll be in no shape to drive after trying Telegraph's 5 beer sampler, which rings in at just $8 and comes with a complimentary beer of your choosing. It's a great way to branch out past their popular white beer and into their limited-availability Obscura family of beers.
416 N. Salsipuedes St., Santa Barbara (805-963-5018)
Day 3: Downtown LA's Food Trucks and Fruity IPAs at Angel City Brewery
Avoid the Santa Monica traffic by making a DTLA detour to Angel City Brewery. The giant space hosts a rotating roster of local food trucks alongside their award-winning brews, including the citrusy Angeleno IPA and smooth Vanilla Porter.
216 S. Alameda St., Los Angeles (213-622-1261)
Day 3: Last Sips and DIY Tips in San Diego at Ballast Point Brewing and Home Brew Mart
After a trip like this, a six-pack in front of the tube just won't hack it. Which is why finishing at Ballast Point in San Diego is so perfect. Not only will you sip your way through fifteen beers on tap (make sure to try the Pescadero Pils), but you can also chat with an expert on how to start or perfect your home-brewing operation. No room in the car for that starter kit? Take notes, then order at their online store instead.
