Your Own Private Idaho

Coeur d'Alene has everything you need for an unforgettable mountain weekend

When winter sets in, Seattleites tend to get restless. So why not take a quick hop to the East to our skinny little neighbor Idaho for a weekend?

Here are the hottest tickets and events in cool, scenic Coeur d'Alene.

You've got plenty of options but only one real choice. The Coeur d'Alene Resort. Right on the lake, this hot spot is in full flight for the holiday season with gorgeous views and one of the best destination spas in the country. It's also a seriously romantic spot to dazzle your girl with an early Christmas gift or two.

Thankfully Silver Mountain got a name change in 1973 (it used to be called "Jackass Ski Bowl," and no, we're not kidding), as it's now northern Idaho's hottest mountain. They've been getting nice, dry powder all season, so ride the world's longest single-stage gondola three miles up for a hell of a descent.
610 Bunker Ave, Kellogg (208-783-1111).

Locals will point you at Bistro on Spruce for the single best meal in town. The cozy eatery boasts huge bay windows letting in the winter sunshine and an accomplished menu — don't miss the spicy togarashi-encrusted Ahi tuna. Their steaks are also the best in town, with cuts varying by the day.
1710 N 4th St. (208-664-1774).

Early winter is one of the coolest times to visit, as flocks of majestic bald eagles fly to Lake Coeur d'Alene to feast on freshly-spawned Kokanee salmon. Take a two-hour cruise around the lake to watch these apex predators in action and get inspired for your next boardroom negotiation.
