On the Green in 45

Less than an hour south, Tacoma beckons for a weekend getaway

Full_chambers

Tacoma used to be a punchline — the foul-smelling industrial cousin of Seattle with none of the charm.

That's changed. The City of Destiny has come into its own, and it smells so good. Here are the top picks for a weekend getaway.

TEE OFF
The 2015 U.S. Open is scheduled to be played at Chambers Bay Golf Course. The 18 holes of Scottish links-style action means gorgeous seaside terrain and no golf carts. Get a jump on the pros with a game here, but bring a caddy: they know the ins and outs of the course and can easily shave a few points off your score.

DINE OUT
Pacific Grill is considered by locals to be the best restaurant Tacoma has ever had, and we concur. The fresh grilled Columbia River steelhead is salmon perfection, and their steaks are nothing to sneeze at either. It's also great for Happy Hour with half-price duck sausage sliders.

SIT & SIP
Tacoma has plenty of bars, from grungy waterfront dives to ritzy hotel spots. Our fave is 1022 South, where you'll want to peruse the Apothecary menu. They brew a staggering selection of infusions and tinctures and use them to make drinks like the Hilltop New Yorker (small batch whiskey, house-made rhubarb bitters, a hint of lime, and a splash of red wine).

REST EASY
If you haven't had your fill of glass art (a Tacoma specialty), book a room at the Hotel MuranoThis downtown boutique inn is full of incredible pieces from 45 different creators, including Costas Varotsos' 104 foot tall Orizon. Splurge for a Patron room on the top floor, with an awesome view of the city below.
