Demon Days

Gorillaz brings to life a Chinese myth

It's not often that we recommend dance events. Or, like, ever.

But when said dance event involves Gorillaz' Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, along with a team of kung-fu masters and a whole Chinese circus, we change our tune just a bit.

This one's called Monkey: Journey to the West, and it's going down next month as part of the 2013 Lincoln Center Festival.

Performed in Mandarin, the mind-bending show is based on a classic Chinese story retold with acrobats, contortionists, and Gorillaz-style animation.

The CliffsNotes version: It's the tale of a monk who goes in search of the Buddha, led by the Monkey King, who royally effs his ish up along the way.

Other themes of interest: Volcanoes, flesh-eating skeleton demons, half-pig-half-human monsters, and sexy spider-women.

So, not exactly a sleepy night at the ballet.

Monkey: Journey to the West
