Mex'd Up

It's time to start game-planning Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo can go one of several ways.

You can do it up fancy with premium tequila, or you can slum it with cheap booze, booming mariachi music, and a well-deserved hangover. There's no right way to celebrate, so here are options for every style.

The High-End: Empellón Taqueria
The very un-Mexican Alex Stupak has proven he can take a foreign cuisine and do it perhaps better than anyone else. Hit up his Taqueria (pictured) for a post-brunch two-course menu with unlimited margaritas, beer and sparkling wine (at $55 a head), or swing by for a six-course dinner — with scallop ceviche, green chorizo fundido, short rib pastrami tacos — with the same booze deal for $75 per.

The Brunch Spot: Rosa Mexicano
After a long night of tequila-fueled pre-partying, you can't go wrong with Rosa's à la carte fried eggs and carnitas hash or a plate of chili-dusted French toast. It'll also brace your system for more boozing — by which we mean the pitchers of passion fruit-and-ginger margaritas, which are best tucked into starting at noon.

The Take-Home: Salvation Taco
Can't deal with the drunken rabble? Or you just want to throw a taco rager of your own? Salvation is your savior, offering a take-home package (feeds five for $55) with guac and chips, all-beef chili, and a choice of beer-braised short ribs or Moroccan spiced lamb shoulder, both served with fresh tortillas and fixins.

The Chain Gang: Chipotle
Wait, wait, wait — hear us out. The burrito-and-bowl chain has been secretly serving margaritas for years, but now they're shaking them up à la minute with Patrón Silver or Sauza, agave, and fresh juice, not that alien-colored sour mix. It may not become your next happy-hour spot, but it's good to know you can get a decent drink on the go (or, um, your lunch hour) without hitting up a bar.
