Sure, the Kentucky Derby's on Saturday, but it lasts all of two minutes.
Instead, roll like our south-of-the-border cousins for Cinco de Mayo and
get blasted on tequila all day long celebrate the French defeat in Puebla.
Start off the day correctly with brunch at Sueños, with some stomach-fortifying chilaquiles and a Passion Fruit Chile de Árbol Margarita. Or two.
12noon-3p. 311 W. 17th St. (8th Ave.), Chelsea (212-243-1333)
Then head downtown for Mex Fest, an all-day eat-athon starring Latin-flavored food trucks, a chili pepper eating contest, and more micheladas than you could possibly consume. Bonus: Admission comes with a sombrero.
12p-7p. South Street Seaport, 89 South St. (Fulton St.), FiDi. $20-80 here.
Siestas are for sissies, so make your way to Maya for its 150 varieties of tequila. Snare a few margaritas from the mariachi-fueled bar, or kick back over a three-course spread of botanas, achiote marinated filet mignon, and some sweet tres leches.
Maya, 1191 1st Ave. (E. 64th St.), Upper East Side (212-585-1818) $50 prix fixe dinner.
Still wearing that sombrero? Corral your drunken crew down to Hecho en Dumbo for the weekend-long Cinco fest. After you've tasted their two muy complicated moles, head next door to Salón Hecho for Juan Cirerol's guitarra stylings straight from Mexico City and, of course, a mezcal margarita. Which we think would be a fine name for one of those racing horsies.
