How do we celebrate surviving the Mayan apocalypse? We do New Year's in Vegas.
Replace one doomsday prophecy with another by partying like your life depended on it at Sin City's top New Year's shows.
Party Under the Fireworks at Surrender
The Mayans, we presume, loved fire. Vegas loves...fireworks. Encore at the Wynn's Surrender Nightclub hosts a four-day electronic music orgy starring Steve Aoki (Dec 28), Calvin Harris (Dec 29), Skrillex (Dec 30), and Eric Prydz (Dec 31). Mirrors on the ceilings, bikini-clad pole dancers, and a NYE open bar from 9-11p highlight these all-out all-night throwdowns.
Dec 28-31 11p-4a. 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. S., The Strip (702-770-7300). $40 and up per night here.
The Black Keys at The Joint at Hard Rock
If you’d rather rock in the new year than roll in the strobe lights, blues impresarios The Black Keys will bring their heavy amped-up assault of buzzsaw guitar riffs, manic drumming, and snarling blues swagger to Hard Rock Hotel’s music venue The Joint for an NYE to get down and dirty to.
Dec 30-31 9:30p. 4455 Paradise Road, Paradise (800-473-7675). $121 & up per night here.
Foster the People at The Bank at Bellagio
For an expert melding of both dance and rock, indie darlings Foster the People can be counted on for sounds as infectious and hypnotizing as a Mayan prophecy. It's like these songs were written by a professional jingle composer — because they were. Infectious synth-pop beats, shimmering vocals, and feel-good enthusiasm: there are worse ways to start 2013 than with a gigantic smile.
Dec 31 10p. 3600 S. Las Vegas Blvd., The Strip (702-693-8300). $165; RSVP here.
