Comedy Improv(e)

Ride with Patton Oswalt on his journey to a new act

It’s not every day you get to see the likes of Patton Oswalt working out new material.
Then again, it’s not every day he decides to share his process with audiences over a multi-stop tour in preparation for two shows at Comic-Con on July 20. Mark your calendars for the Comedy Without Airplanes tour.
The Residency at The FAKE Gallery
This will be the easiest of the four to attend. A forty-five minute free set on Melrose? (Almost) every Thursday for two months? You may not be a diehard roadie but come on, tickle yourself with some fresh one-liners.
8p May 2, 8, 16, 30; Jun 6, 13, 20, 27; Jul 3, 11. 4319 Melrose Ave, Wilshire Center. Free.
The Jaunt at the Irvine Improv
No one ever needs to go to Irvine. But for the price of gas, an evening in what Patton himself calls “the Lean Cuisine entrée" that is anything behind the Orange Curtain allows you to watch him live-knife every joke that won’t make it to San Diego. Oh, and one more catch: It's not free because, after all, what's free in Orange County?
8p May 6-7; Jun 10-11; July 15-16. 71 Fortune Dr., Irvine. $22 here.
The Salon at The Largo at Coronet
You never know who will be a guest performer at these shows, as Oswalt calls in as many favors as he can without upstaging himself. You may also catch Louis CK or Paul F. Tompkins, but you won’t know unless you go. Buy tix now, the May show's already sold out.
9p May 11 (sold out); Jun 8; & July 13. The Largo at Coronet, West Hollywood. $25 here.
