Spirit Glow

LA's best holiday hangs

So what if the North Pole is almost 4,000 miles away.

LA has elves and real snow and no fear of frostbite. Here are the best ongoing attractions to get you into the holiday spirit.

Westwood: CHILL at the W Los Angeles
For the third year in a row, the hotel's swimming pool is transformed into a 1,600 sq. ft. custom-designed ice rink. And this isn't your ordinary skate session, it's an expertly-styled experience with signature food and cocktails from the Ice Bar, and even hourly snowfall.
$10/hr, including skate rental. Thru Jan 1. W Los Angeles, 930 Hilgard Ave, Westwood (310-208-8765)

Buena Park: Knott's Merry Farm
Temporarily trading in its famed boysenberries, the theme park's trademark 1880s Ghost Town transforms into a Victorian winter wonderland inspired by a Charlie Brown Christmas. But unlike the paltry sapling Chuck decorates, they've got a 65-foot tall Christmas tree, a Peanuts holiday parade, and a giant ice-skating Snoopy.
$39. Park opens at 10a, Nov 24-Dec 30. Knott's Berry Farm, 8039 Beach Blvd, Buena Park (714-220-5200)

Huntington Beach: Cruise of Lights
Now in its 49th year, the Cruise of Lights offers boat rides through Huntington Harbor for a priceless view of hundreds of homes, boats, docks, and decks, all redefining the practice of holiday decorating.
$15-$17. Dec 15-23, hourly from 5:30p-8:30p. 16889 Algonquin Street, Huntington Beach (714-840-7542)

Edendale: Bob Baker Marionettes Holiday Spectacular
Bob Baker and his handcrafted puppets are something of a local institution, and there's no better time to check them out than during the holidays. Whether it's a journey to Santa's workshop or a Chanukah celebration, Bob and his crew of more than 100 marionettes bring the string.
$20. Thru January 8. 1345 W. First Street, Los Angeles (213-250-9995)

Universal City: Universal Studios Hollywood Grinchmas

Treat yourself to a White Christmas with real-life snow at Universal Studios, which morphs from a Hollywood backlot to Whoville for the holidays. Here, Santa's nothing compared to the Grinch, and he's a mean one.
Buy a day for $77, get 2012 free. Dec 17-Jan 1. 1000 Universal Center Dr, Universal City (1-800-UNIVERSAL)
