Eat Your Heart Out

Two food festivals take over July

Our plan for surviving "Carmageddon" in mid-July? Self-induced food coma.

With two food fests converging on a 405-less LA, suddenly the weekend we were all looking for reasons to avoid just gave us a culinary double-feature to keep us distracted.

East side
Feast on the food trucks that don’t park in front of your office at the Rose Bowl's 2nd Annual LA Street Food Summer Tasting Event.

More than 75 street food vendors take over the site of the Granddaddy of Them All, setting up a Singha beer garden, a celebrity chef cook-off, and the Ice Cream Social, where Mother Moo Creamery, Coolhaus, and other sweet trucks meet for a brain-freeze face-off.

On the westside, keep it local at the free Eat Real Fest in Culver City in the Helms Bakery complex. At this blown-out block party, you'll catch live music all weekend long from daytime into the evening.

But food is the focus, with an extensive gourmet market and cooking demos highlighting fresh, local ingredients: make your own sauerkraut and pickles, or learn the basics of butchery.

No matter what, you'll be able to keep to surface streets without going hungry.
