Beef Up

Dallas' top 5 budget-friendly steaks

In a city where children take grilled sirloin to school in their lunch boxes and steak fingers are considered a side dish, there's definitely no dearth of beef options.

But finding the most delectable, expertly prepared cuts on the cheap is a bit more of a challenge. One we've accepted. Gladly.

Here are the top five steaks under $30 from some unexpected places.

5. Gin Mill
Best known for its extensive beer menu and lively patio scene, Gin Mill's 12-oz ribeye steak served over red-skinned smashed potatoes (with grilled asparagus or green bean frites) makes for a truly memorable evening. Add smoky bacon compote to really let loose.
1921 N. Henderson Ave., Knox/Henderson (214-824-3343).

4. Soleo Mexican Kitchen
Clocking in as the least expensive of the bunch, the ribeye fajitas pack plenty of flavor, served with super-fresh pico de gallo, charro beans, Mexican rice, sour cream, guacamole, and your choice of tortillas. Spend the money you save on a margarita.
8611 Hillcrest Ave., Preston Hollow (214-346-1712).

3. Chef Point  Cafe
The area's most famous fine dining restaurant operating out of a working gas station serves up one helluva 14-oz blackened Braveheart ribeye. Just the right marbling, a crispy sear and a generous side of roasted potatoes and freshly grilled veggies make the road trip worth it.
5901 Watauga Rd., Watauga (817-656-0080).

2. Seasons 52
You won't find an oak-grilled filet mignon like this one anywhere else. It's served with cremini mushrooms, steamed leaf spinach, mashed potatoes and red wine sauce, and as an added bonus, the entire plate is under 475 calories. Your belt buckle and your wallet will thank you later.
8687 N. Central Expwy. (at NorthPark Center), Preston Hollow (214-361-5252).

Leave it to hunters and gatherers to deliver a truly remarkable slab o' beef. Of all the steaks we consumed for this Rundown, it's this New York Strip with wild mushroom ragout (pictured) that we long for in the middle of the night. Every night. Sometimes twice.
2008 Greenville Ave., Lower Greenville (469-334-0896).
