This weekend, prepare to take flight. And we don’t mean standing in line at O’Hare.
We mean National Red Bull Flugtag Day, crashing into Burnham Harbor as the Windy City squares off against teams in five cities from LA to Miami.
For those who aren’t familiar with this offbeat air and water show, let’s break down the rules:
1) Create a crazy handmade, totally human-powered self-constructed glider that may or may not fly.
2) Round up a crew of a pilot and four “pushers” dressed in the most ridiculous costumes you can find.
3) Run down a 30-foot ramp and push the aircraft off the edge to crash in the waters below.
Local teams include the five-inch leather pump-wearing Hell on Heels, steampunk pilots Still Smugglin’, and the anime superheroes of Pat’s Angels “flying” old-school wooden planes and strange bird-like aircraft.
Teams will be judged on flight distance, creativity, and showmanship, with the winners earning a skydiving trip and national bragging rights.
So throw on some aviators and let's hope for a strong wind blowing off the lake.
