Go for the knockout with these local UFC events

Is it just us or does everyone in Boston feel slightly more hyper-aggressive than usual this week?

Maybe it's our cologne.

Or maybe it's because UFC returns to the city ahead of Saturday night's fight at the Garden. Let's take a look at the five best ways to enjoy UFC Week from a safe distance outside the Octagon.

Conor McGregor
It's not hard to see why Boston has taken to 25-year old featherweight phenom Conor McGregor: he's tough, he's relentless, and oh yeah, he's Irish. The Dublin-born fighter nicknamed "Notorious" should feel right at home during his open workout in Peter Welch's Gym in Southie, and so will you at the UFC Fan Gathering afterwards at The Blackthorn Bar.

Tue 3p. Peter Welch's Gym, 371-393 Dorchester Ave., South Boston (617-269-4641). Free.

Under normal circumstances, we probably wouldn't take time out of our day to watch other guys work out. But these aren't just any ordinary guys. Rua, Sonnen, and their main card co-headliners will all take part in open training.
Wed 1-3p. TD Garden, 100 Legends Way, West End (617-624-1050). Free.

UFC president Dana White has a special place in his (very rich) heart for Boston. It's the place where he made his bones managing a boxing gym in Southie. Which is why his fundraising event with Bruins forward Shawn Thornton and UFC Hall of Famer Forrest Griffin goes deeper than food, ticket giveaways, and a Q&A session. $50 VIP tickets include a pre-event meet & greet with White and guests.
Wed 7p. Barrio Cantina, 1363 Boylston St., Fenway (857-753-4100). $20-$50 here.

UFC Fight Night
A week's worth of buildup comes down to this: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua versus Chael Sonnen going at it in the House That Bird Built. Heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Travis Browne also meet on the Main Card but with six other fights leading up to that, they'll be more than enough a$$ kicking to keep you in your seat.
Sat 4:30p. TD Garden, 100 Legends Way, West End (617-624-1050). $66-$322 here.

Waterfront Cafe
If you can't make it to the Garden, take a short walk to Waterfront Cafe, where they'll be showing the main event on more flatscreen TVs than you ever imagined could fit in a North End space. Plus, some of the best burgers in town, served a safe distance from the punches (we hope).
Sat 4:30p. 450 Commercial St., North End (617-523-4055).
