Steak Out

Boston's top 5 big steaks on a small budget

Steakhouses are a little like strip clubs: they're both great places to lose money fast.

Thankfully, we tracked down five great steaks for under $30, so you still have enough for, ehm, tips.

5. Classic New York Sirloin at Moo...
Tucked in the sleek XV Beacon Hotel, the steakhouse with the funny name does a serious 12-oz. sirloin served with roasted garlic and bone marrow butter.
Mooo...,15 Beacon St., Beacon Hill (617-670-2515). $26.
4. Prime Skirt Steak at Grill 23
Grill 23 perennially ranks among the city's top steak joints, but fame hasn't gone to their head. They still offer a juicy cut of skirt steak (pictured) paired with gremolata frites.
Grill 23 Bar & Grill, 161 Berkeley St., Back Bay (617-542-2255). $29.

3. Grass Fed Beef Tenderloin at Bogie's Place
The restaurant-within-a-restaurant at jm Curley takes after its namesake: a classy, comfortable haunt for a stiff cocktail and this tender 7-oz. locally-raised steak.
Bogie's Place at jm Curley, 25 Temple Place, Downtown (617-338-6333). $29. Reservations required.

It doesn't get much more American than steak & potatoes, and you can find both — one a 14-oz. prime cut, the other of the garlic whipped variety — at Joe's on Newbury.
Joe's American Bar & Grill, 161 Newbury St., Back Bay (617-536-4200). $26.

1. Roasted Filet Mignon at Gaslight
South End brasserie Gaslight's roasted filet mignon special with braised beef cheek, charred asparagus, pommes puree and bordelaise sauce is a secret too good to keep.
