Speak Easy

Classy gets casual at Spoke Wine Bar

Quick, name your top three French vineyards.

We'll wait.

Not exactly like rattling off your favorite breweries, is it? But it could be at Spoke Wine Bar, debuting in Davis Square now.

The idea is simple: treat great wines from limited-production vineyards in France and Italy the same way you'd treat great beer — served by the glass in a casual atmosphere with plenty of options. Or put another way: the perfect place to learn before a big date, or the perfect place for that date itself.

But a warning: once you graduate to a brilliant glass of 2009 pinot noir from Burgundy, there's no looking back.

While burgers and beer will always go together, you'll enjoy some more ambitious pairings this time around; including roasted swordfish, goat milk gnocchi, and spicy lamb sausage.

And if you can't really resist, go ahead and order yourself a Nectar IPA.

Because baby steps are better than backwards ones.
